The HSE’s 2026 to 2027 Winter Vaccination Programme has launched in Waterford, with flu and COVID-19 vaccines now available to eligible people.

Everyone aged 60 and over, along with people with certain underlying health conditions or a weakened immune system, is being encouraged to get both vaccines this winter.

Healthcare workers, pregnant women and children aged between two and 17 are also recommended to get the flu vaccine.

A free enhanced flu vaccine is available for people aged 65 and older, while children aged two to 17 can receive a free nasal flu vaccine through participating GPs and pharmacies.

Last winter, 25,000 confirmed cases of flu were reported in Ireland, with almost 6,000 people hospitalised and 185 people admitted to intensive care.

There were also more than 300 deaths among people with confirmed flu.

Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available free of charge to eligible people and can be given at the same appointment.

Vaccinations are available through participating GPs and pharmacies, while HSE vaccination teams will visit nursing homes and other residential care facilities and provide vaccinations to people who are housebound.

Dedicated flu vaccination clinics will also be available for healthcare workers.

Dr Carmel Mullaney, Regional Director of Public Health with the HSE Dublin and South East, is encouraging those who are eligible to get vaccinated to help protect themselves and others this winter.

More information is available from participating GPs and pharmacists or through the HSE website.
