A Waterford dog expert is urging pet owners across the city and county to take precautions ahead of Halloween, warning that fireworks and loud noises can cause significant distress to animals.

Lyndsey Power, owner and founder of Inn the Doghouse, a luxury dog hotel, daycare and training facility in Ballynaneaslagh, says preparation is key to keeping pets calm and safe during one of the most frightening times of the year for animals.

With Halloween approaching, she is encouraging dog and cat owners across Waterford to create a quiet, secure environment for their pets, particularly during the evening when fireworks and other loud noises are more likely.

Lyndsey recommends keeping animals indoors on Halloween night, closing windows and curtains, and using a television or radio to help drown out sudden bangs.

She says frightened dogs should be allowed to retreat to a safe space, with owners offering reassurance and avoiding forcing them out of hiding.

Dog owners are also being advised to avoid walking their pets after dark, as sudden fireworks could cause animals to panic and run away.

Even when taking dogs outside for toilet breaks, Lyndsey recommends keeping them on a lead, as frightened animals may attempt to escape or jump fences.

Preparation is key

According to Lyndsey, owners should begin preparing their pets well in advance of Halloween rather than waiting until the night itself.

Products such as pheromone diffusers and calming collars may help some dogs, while pressure wraps, including ThunderShirts, can also provide comfort when introduced gradually.

However, she warns that these products may not be enough for animals experiencing severe anxiety, and owners should seek veterinary advice where necessary.

For households expecting trick-or-treaters, Lyndsey suggests leaving treats outside with a polite note asking visitors not to knock or ring the doorbell if these sounds upset their pets.

She also highlights that fireworks can have a serious impact on other animals, including cats, birds and wildlife.

The Waterford business owner is encouraging people celebrating Halloween to consider the effect their activities may have on animals in surrounding homes and communities.

Her message to pet owners is that a little preparation can make a significant difference in helping animals feel safe and secure throughout the Halloween festivities.
