A free family-friendly guided cycle celebrating National Biodiversity Week will take place on the Waterford Greenway on Saturday, May 23rd.

Organised by the Waterford Bicycle Users Group (WBUG), the event aims to showcase the rich biodiversity and natural beauty of the Greenway while encouraging people of all ages to get active, cycle, and explore the outdoors.

The guided cycle will depart from the Carriganore car park at 2 pm and is expected to last approximately 90 minutes. Participants will travel through some of the Greenway’s most scenic stretches, with a focus on the local flora, fauna, and archaeological heritage along the route.

To mark National Biodiversity Week, WBUG has partnered with B-Corridor, a community biodiversity group based in the Dunmore Road area of Waterford City. The group works to create and preserve pollinator-friendly habitats within the local community.

Brian Jacob from B-Corridor will speak during the event about the importance of protecting local ecosystems. He will offer practical advice on how people can support biodiversity in their own gardens and neighbourhoods.

A spokesperson for WBUG said they were delighted to combine cycling with environmental awareness.

“Partnering with groups like B-Corridor allows us to highlight the important role green spaces such as the Waterford Greenway play in supporting both biodiversity and community wellbeing,” they said.

The Irish Cycling Campaign and National Biodiversity Week support the event. Light refreshments will also be provided afterwards, allowing attendees to meet and discuss future community initiatives.

Participation is free, and no registration is required. Organisers are encouraging families, cyclists, and members of the public to come along and enjoy the afternoon.
