A grant scheme aimed at bringing more activity to Waterford city centre during quieter evening hours has opened for applications.

Waterford City and County Council and Waterford Purple Flag are offering grants of between €500 and €1,000 to support creative, cultural and community events.

Artists, venues, businesses and community groups can apply for funding to trial initiatives including live performances, exhibitions, wellness evenings, guided tours and workshops.

Supported events must take place within Waterford City’s Purple Flag Zone after 5pm between Sunday and Thursday.

Michael Quinn, Director of Services with Waterford City and County Council, said the scheme follows a successful pilot last year.

‘We have seen how the NTE grants provided artists, community groups and businesses with exciting opportunities to develop innovative night-time initiatives that contributed to Waterford’s evening economy,’ he said.

‘The importance of a thriving night-time economy cannot be overstated.’

Applications are open until 4.30pm on Wednesday, September 2nd.

Successful events must take place between September 4th and November 13th.
