The ‘really selfless’ act from Ciara Mageean’s husband Thomas Moran has been revealed one week after the devastating death of the two-time Olympian.

The middle-distance runner died peacefully at the Marie Curie Hospice surrounded by her family last Sunday morning.

Her death came just over a year after the athlete was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer.

On Friday, the 2024 European Champion was honoured during a poignant segment on RTÉ One’s Late Late Show.

The sport star was due to appear on the show to talk about her new book, but following her untimely death, the show dedicated a special part to celebrating her life and legacy.

Fellow athletes Ellen Keane and Thomas Barr and broadcaster Greg Allen joined Patrick Kielty on the show to talk about the life of their late friend.

The heartbreaking tribute saw the trio reflect on the woman behind the medals, remembering her infectious personality, generosity and enormous pride in representing Ireland.

‘Everyone is going to know Ciara for her accolades, but we’re going to remember her and cherish her as a national treasure,’ Thomas Barr shared.

Ellen discussed Ciara’s love for her hometown of Portaferry and the Irish people, saying she had always done everything for the people she loved.

‘The thing about Ciara is that everything that she achieved in her life, she did it for the people that she loved.’

The Paralympian went on to share the ‘really selfless’ act that came from Ciara’s husband Thomas in the hours following her death.

News of Ciara’s passing came just hours after her final breath, with Ellen detailing how Thomas had decided he ‘needed to share’ the news.

‘That was a really selfless thing for him to do, and Ciara’s the most selfless person that I have ever met, so is Tommy,’ Ellen lauded.

‘And for him to be able to allow the country to mourn her, and to allow us to be here today to talk about her, that takes great strength.’

Mageean represented Ireland at two Olympic Games, and won European Gold in the 1500m race in Rome in 2024.

She is survived by her husband Thomas, parents Christopher and Catherine, and siblings Máire, Brendan and Nuala.
