Following the recent fire at the old Jute Factory in Tycor, Waterford city, on Saturday evening (May 9th), asbestos-containing materials (ACM) have been identified in the fire-damaged structure and debris.
As a result of the fire and associated smoke plume, a limited amount of fire debris is understood to have been deposited on surrounding footpaths and roadways within the general vicinity of the site.
A specialist contractor has been appointed to conduct a precautionary clean-up of the affected external areas, and an independent asbestos consultancy has been appointed to monitor the environment throughout the remediation works.
Air monitoring conducted on Sunday did not detect elevated asbestos fibre concentrations in the air. Monitoring will continue during the planned clean-up works, which commenced this morning (Monday, May 11th).
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has been informed of the situation. The Local Authority continues to work with the HSE, which is available to provide public health advice where required.
Members of the public are advised to avoid the area as operations continue, and public health advice remains:
· Those not resident in the immediate vicinity are advised to avoid the area
· If you smell smoke, close all windows, doors, and vents
· Stay out of smoke – this may mean staying indoors
As additional precautionary measures, members of the public within the immediate vicinity of the site are advised to:
· Close all windows, doors, and vents
· Do not touch / remove any debris, ash or soot particles
· If necessary, dampen down dust particles with a light dousing of water. It is important not to disturb or aerosolise particles. Do not use a power hose
· Do not brush debris
· Do not use a vacuum
· Do not cut / mow grass
· Do not bring debris, dust, ash, or suspected ACMs into your home on footwear or clothing
· Remove and clean footwear before entering the house, where possible
· Wash hands thoroughly after any outdoor activities
If you think you are experiencing health effects, please seek medical attention. Those with respiratory or heart disease should take extra precautions to avoid smoke. Those in the immediate vicinity should avoid exercising outdoors.
The Local Authority is continuing to work closely with the building owners and relevant specialists to ensure the site is fully remediated and managed appropriately.
The Local Authority would like to thank members of the public for their patience and cooperation while these works are being carried out.
