A ceremony is set to take place later on Wednesday afternoon to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the Creeslough petrol station explosion.

The incident, which claimed the lives of 10 people on October 7, 2022, plunged the Donegal town into mourning.

The four men, three women and three children killed in the explosion ranged in age from five to 59.

The victims were five-year-old Shauna-Flanagan Garwe and her 50-year-old father Robert Garwe, 14-year-old Leona Harper, 59-year-old Hugh Kelly, 24-year-old Jessica Gallagher, 49-year-old Martin McGill, 48-year-old James O’Flaherty, 49-year-old Martina Martin, 39-year-old Catherine O’Donnell and her 13-year-old son James Monaghan.

Their memory is expected to be honoured with prayers from local clergy during the anniversary ceremony, with family members and friends set to lay wreaths at the site.

Gardaí are still pursuing an investigation into the incident, with the help of the Health and Safety Authority and the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities.

In September of last year, a file was sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. A supplementary file was then sent in April, including formal recommendations.

The office has still not indicated when a decision will be made.

Bereaved families have repeatedly called for ‘answers’ over the explosion, with some meeting Sinn Féin leadership and Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan earlier this year.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said that O’Callaghan’s thoughts are with the families, loved ones, survivors and the wider community of Creeslough.

They also stated that the minister has placed a high priority on seeing criminal and other investigations progress.

Garda liaison officers have reportedly been meeting with families and survivors to provide them with support and updates on the investigation.

Gardaí are still appealing to anyone with any information, who may not have spoken formally to them to date, to come forward.
