New road markings introduced at the Monvoy Roundabout in Tramore have been removed after driver behaviour indicated that the trial one-lane layout was not working as intended.
The road markings, which were installed several weeks ago as part of the ongoing Tramore Ring Road Active Travel Scheme, were designed to create a single circulation lane around the roundabout.
The Monvoy Roundabout was selected as a trial location, with similar lining planned for the other three large roundabouts along the Tramore Ring Road, according to Waterford City and County Council.
The new layout used spoke-style road markings on the inner section of the roundabout to direct motorists towards using a single circulating lane, matching the single-lane entries and exits at the roundabout.
However, according to Waterford City and County Council, observations of driver behaviour following the installation showed that the intended arrangement was not being adequately followed.
As a result, the recently installed markings were removed today Wednesday, September 16th, while a revised design is developed.
The Council said the purpose of removing the markings is to allow time for a more appropriate road-lining design to be developed before a similar layout is considered for the remaining roundabouts.
A Council spokesperson said: “Observed driver behaviour has indicated that this objective is not being adequately met.”
A revised lining design for all four of the large roundabouts on the Tramore Ring Road is expected to be developed in the coming weeks, with the Council saying the new design will take account of both the necessary technical requirements and actual driver behaviour.
The works form part of a major Active Travel upgrade along the Tramore Ring Road which has been continuing for several months, with the development aimed at improving walking and cycling infrastructure in the town.
The €5.5 million scheme, being delivered by Waterford City and County Council with funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA), covers approximately 3.2 kilometres of the Ring Road between the Riverstown Roundabout and the Newtown Hill Road Roundabout.
