Clocks Go Back This Weekend

People across Waterford can look forward to an extra hour in bed this weekend as the clocks go back, marking the end of Irish Summer Time.

At 2am on Sunday, October 25, clocks will move back one hour to 1am as Ireland switches to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) for the winter months.

While the change means an extra hour of sleep for many, it also signals the arrival of darker evenings as daylight hours continue to shorten.

For people across Waterford City and County, sunset will move from approximately 6pm to 5pm following the change, although mornings will temporarily become brighter.

Why do the clocks change?

Ireland changes its clocks twice a year, moving forward in March and back in October.

The system is designed to make better use of daylight during the summer months, with the clocks moving forward by an hour in spring to provide longer, brighter evenings.

The October change returns the country to winter time, with daylight becoming increasingly limited as December approaches.

The shortest day of the year will fall on Monday, December 21, when Waterford will experience fewer than eight hours of daylight.

Don’t forget to change your clocks

Most smartphones, computers and other internet-connected devices will update automatically overnight.

However, traditional clocks, watches, car dashboards and household appliances may need to be adjusted manually.

When will the clocks go forward again?

The brighter evenings will return next spring, with clocks scheduled to move forward again on Sunday, March 28, 2027.

Until then, Waterford residents can expect earlier sunsets, darker evenings and the familiar signs of winter setting in.

The good news? At least there’s an extra hour in bed this weekend
