Two Waterford TDs are calling on the Government to begin greater planning for the possibility of a united Ireland.

Sinn Féin TDs for Waterford Conor McGuinness and David Cullinane made the call following the signing of an agreement between Sinn Féin, the SNP and Plaid Cymru in Cardiff.

The Memorandum of Understanding commits the three parties to greater cooperation in areas including renewable energy, economic policy and European and international affairs.

It also reaffirms their support for the right of people to determine their own constitutional future.

Waterford TD Conor McGuinness said recent developments have brought the issue of Irish unity further into mainstream political debate.

He said the Government should begin planning and dialogue involving communities across the island.

Mr. McGuinness also argued that discussions around constitutional change should consider what it could mean for Waterford.

‘For places like Waterford, this conversation should also be about the opportunities a new Ireland can create: better infrastructure, stronger regional economies, good jobs and investment in our communities,’ he said.

Waterford TD David Cullinane said greater cooperation across the island could create opportunities for Waterford and the South East.

‘For Waterford and the South East, a united Ireland could mean greater investment, better connectivity, stronger public services and new opportunities for jobs and economic development,’ he said.

Mr. Cullinane said cooperation could already be expanded in areas including renewable energy, infrastructure, inequality and regional development.

Both TDs are calling for what they describe as an inclusive conversation about Ireland’s constitutional future.
