The theme for European Mobility Week, which takes place from September 16th to 22nd and culminating in Car Free Day, is Mobility for Everyone.
Waterford City and County Council is encouraging everyone to leave the car at home and make our streets safer, greener, healthier and accessible to everyone.
A series of family-friendly, car-free events featuring live music, food and performing arts will take place on the Prom in Tramore and on the Mall in Waterford city throughout the weekend.
Waterford City and County Council has teamed up with the Vitamin Sea Festival to bring ‘Social Streets’ to the Prom, Tramore on Saturday, September 19th and Sunday September 20th.
From Pilates on the Prom, live music with DJ Paul Flynn, walking tours, and food and craft markets, the Prom will be a hive of car-free activities throughout the weekend.
To accommodate car-free activities, the Lower Prom in Tramore will be closed to vehicular traffic from Friday, September 18th at 10pm until 6pm Sunday, September 20th.
Social Streets continues on the streets of Waterford city on Sunday, September 20th as The Mall is transformed into the backdrop for Music on the Mall, Art with WAMA, roller-skating workshops, kids’ activity workshops, and market stalls with the very best of local crafts, foods and handmade treats from 12pm to 5pm.
To accommodate Social Streets, the Mall will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6am to 7pm on Sunday, September 20th.
Jemma Jacob, Road Safety Officer with Waterford City and County Council is encouraging everyone to get involved and enjoy the car-free activities throughout the week. “This European Mobility Week, we’re encouraging everyone across Waterford to leave the car at home where possible and choose a more sustainable way to travel. Walk, cycle, take the bus or carpool and help make our streets cleaner, safer and healthier.
“Through small actions such as choosing to bus or walk to work or school or carpooling with friends and colleagues, we can make our streets safer and more accessible for all. These actions also have a huge impact on the environment, by reducing emissions and improving the quality of air we breathe.”
