The ex-wife of Tommy Fleming has said she has been inundated with messages of support – saying she is ‘grateful’ to those helping her through her ‘dark days’.

Just over two weeks ago, Tina Mitchell broke her silence after her estranged husband went on Newstalk to announce he is gay with host Ciara Kelly after the couple confirmed their 20-year-marriage ended last October.

The Sligo singer spoke candidly about his sexuality, mental health struggles and what he described as living a ‘double life’ during his marriage.

But the aftermath of Tommy’s interview left his ex, Tina, feeling angry, with the mum-of-two saying she ‘regrets’ ever marrying the star.

Her comments sparked a flurry of messages from fans wanting to support Tina.

Now, Tina has released a statement through her social media, thanking those who supported her ‘during one of the most difficult periods of my life.’

She said: ‘Thank you all. To everyone who has reached out, thank you. Your kindness, compassion and encouragement have meant more than I can put into words.

‘During one of the most difficult periods of my life, your support has been a source of strength and comfort to both me and my family.’

Tina said she has received an ‘overwhelming numbers of messages’ and hopes to respond to everyone in due course.

‘Every message has been appreciated and none have gone unnoticed.’

Tina said she felt ‘enormously grateful’ to those ‘who have stood by us.’

‘Your support, kindness and belief in us have helped carry us through some very dark days.

‘To everyone who has supported my family and me, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your compassion and understanding will never be forgotten,’ she added.

Just over two weeks ago, Tina told the Sunday Independent: ‘It doesn’t matter whether he was bisexual, straight, gay or whatever he was when he met me – he knew, so he should not have married me.

‘He shouldn’t have stolen 24 years of my life. I regret ever meeting him.’

During his interview on The Hard Shoulder, Tommy said he had spent years concealing his sexuality and described the emotional toll of living ‘a lie’.

‘I had been living a lie for all my life really,’ he said.

‘The hardest part of that was the energy and the effort it took for this lie to be constantly covered. That lie was that I’m gay.’

The singer also acknowledged the hurt caused to his family by recent events.

‘There’s anger, and I absolutely understand that anger,’ he said.

‘The only thing I can say is, I’m absolutely remorseful and regretful for any of the hurt I’ve caused to the people I love in pursuing my truth or living my truth.’

Tommy added that while he did not expect forgiveness, he hoped there could eventually be acceptance as both sides continue to navigate the fallout from the separation.
