Star Trek star Patrick Stewart, the acclaimed actor who became a household name as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Professor Charles Xavier, died today surrounded by loved ones, according to a statement shared on his official social media.
The veteran British actor, best known for commanding the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation and playing Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, reportedly passed away on Monday following a brief battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
A statement shared on his official social media account said he died in the care of his wife, Sunny, surrounded by family and friends.

The message described his final moments as being filled with music, prayer, tears and laughter. Stewart enjoyed a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, earning acclaim both on stage and on screen.
Although millions came to know him as the thoughtful, commanding Captain Picard, his career extended far beyond science fiction. A classically trained Shakespearean actor, he built his reputation with the Royal Shakespeare Company before Star Trek brought him international fame.
His performance as Picard made him a central figure in one of television’s most beloved franchises, and the character later returned in Star Trek: Picard.

He also won over a new generation of cinema fans as Professor X, the X-Men’s powerful mentor, appearing alongside Hugh Jackman and other Hollywood stars.
Off-screen, Stewart was widely respected for his theatre work and distinguished voice, which also earned him roles in animation and video games. His life story included a difficult childhood in Yorkshire and a long journey from the British stage to international stardom.
Stewart was knighted in 2010 for services to drama, recognising his contribution to British theatre and the wider entertainment industry. He married American singer-songwriter Sunny Ozell in 2013, and the couple lived together in the United States.
Reports of his death mark the end of an extraordinary career that earned him admiration from generations of theatre, television, and film fans.
All of us at Marvel Studios are deeply saddened by the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart. Sir Patrick brought Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the character for generations of fans, from “X-Men” to “Logan” to “Avengers: Doomsday.” He was a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman. Our hearts go out to his wife Sunny, his children, his friends, and the countless fans around the world whose lives he touched with his art.
