Sharon Horgan has said her new show ‘Youth’ would be much darker if she made it during some ‘seismic changes’ in her life.

The comedy follows a divorcee’s search for sex and love while juggling her ailing parents and should-be grown up son. Sharon stars alongside Aran Murphy and Sharlene Whyte in the series.

‘Youth’, which airs on HBO, was written over five years ago, when Sharon was turning 50 and dealing with ‘seismic’ life changes – including a divorce from Jeremy Rainbird in 2019 after 14 years of marriage.

Sharon said the finished TV series is slightly different to the original concept, thanks to the passing of time.

She said: ‘I went back and had a look at the original document and there was so much in there that we kept: the dynamic between Alex and Ruarí was still the same, all the characters existed as well as guest characters.

‘What’s changed is that I’ve a different perspective; I would have been writing the original script when I was hitting 50. I’ve a slightly different relationship with ageing and age now, I think I’m a little bit happier.

‘But then also, massive, seismic things have happened in my life that have added to the content of the show. That’s made it more interesting and complex. If I’d made it then, it definitely would have been a darker thing, it would have been harder to find the comedy,’ she told the RTÉ Guide.

On Sunday, a special red carpet preview screening of the first two episodes of  ‘Youth’ was shown at The Stella Cinema in Dublin and was attended by a host of famous faces, including Sharon’s younger brother, Mark.

Comedian Norma Sheahan was also in attendance, along with Amanda Brunker, Lorraine Keane and her daughters Emelia and Romy.
