Nicola Coughlan has been confirmed as an upcoming host for Saturday Night Live UK.

This announcement comes just a few weeks after the Galway native made a cameo appearance in the opening episode of the series.

Nicola shared the news on her Instagram account, confirming that she will host the live show on April 25 alongside musical guests Foo Fighters.

Nicola has gained global acclaim for her role as Penelope in the hit Netflix series Bridgerton, after already becoming a household name in Ireland and the UK following Derry Girls.

Her hosting announcement was quite expected after already appearing in Tina Fey’s inaugural monologue on the British version of the long-running US sketch show.

After Tina delivered her witty opening comments, she took a couple of brief questions from the audience, one of which came from Nicola.

The 39-year-old jokingly asked: ‘It is lovely to see you, but my question is if this is SNL UK, then why are you the first host? Shouldn’t it be like a British icon, like David Beckham or Judi Dench or like Shrek?’

When Tina questioned: ‘Shrek is British?’, Nicola explained: ‘Scotland is in Britain, Tina. Educate yourself.’

‘My apologies,’ Tina responded, before hitting out that ‘none of you f****rs would do it’.

Nicola went on to note: ‘Is it possible that many of us were a little reluctant to be in the first show because this is going out in Britain and British people tend to root for the failure of others.’

After Tina queried: ‘Why are you guys like that?’, Nicola bluntly noted that she is Irish, before reiterating: ‘Educate yourself’.

Graham Norton followed Nicola into the monologue, explaining how SNL UK is in the same studio he films The Graham Norton Show in.

There was more Irish representation on the show the following week, when Jamie Dornan hosted with some hilarious skits.

In his opening monologue, Jamie revealed his love for collecting rocks that look like potatoes, with viewers even getting a glimpse at some of the collection.

He went on to encourage people to Google it to double-check that he was telling the truth.
