Katja Mia has opened up about living with ‘excruciating pain’ before receiving her life-changing endometriosis diagnosis.

The 30-year-old, who recently wed her longtime love, Daragh Curran, will unpack her experience with the condition in a documentary titled Health Hysteria: Are Women Being Gaslit?

But first, Katja laid all of her cards on the table and spoke candidly to her followers about why she was the best woman for the job as she detailed her first-hand experience.

Speaking on Instagram, Katja said: ‘I have endometriosis. It took me 14 years to get that diagnosis here in Ireland. So, I thought we could talk about it.

‘If you have a group of girlfriends, I guarantee at least one of them has been gaslit by a doctor or some sort of medical expert in their lifetime.

‘Well, I’m actually investigating this as part of a documentary that’s coming out with Virgin Media in October.’

Katja told her followers that she started getting her period when she was 13 years old, and was ‘excited’ about entering womanhood, but ‘oh my God, did it turn on me’.

‘Once my period started to become more regular, it got excruciatingly painful,’ she recalled.

The 2FM star spoke of how she would often have to miss days of school as a young teen because of the intense pain during her time of the month.

‘I would be on my hands and knees crawling to the bathroom floor if I had no help around me,’ she said. ‘I was popping pills like sweets because I couldn’t hack the pain.

Katja admitted that living with endometriosis meant she had to make sure a bathroom was near at all times.

‘From the outside, it might not look like the amount of pain that you are going through on the inside,’ she said. ‘Unless you’ve had it or know someone with it, it’s really hard to understand.

Katja first went to the doctor for her period pain at 13 and was prescribed Ponstan. She said: ‘Unfortunately, I wasn’t the perfect candidate for it, so I made a painkiller system for myself instead.’

But it wasn’t until the radio star turned 28 that she started doing more research into the pain, figuring it couldn’t just be really intense period pain.

‘I contacted a fertility clinic, and they did an ultrasound and found an endometrioma on my ovary. This confirmed that I had endometriosis,’ she explained.

‘So, until I became an advocate for myself and paid €250 for a private scan, then I found out what it was,’ Katja said.

In the caption of her video, the 2FM star wrote: ‘Have you ever felt gaslit by a medical expert before? It frustrates me how long it took to get a diagnosis, but I’m glad I was able to advocate for myself.’
