Football legend Shay Given’s new wife, Rebecca Gibson, has shared details about some of the sweet moments from their wedding day.
The couple met in 2013, the same year Shay announced his divorce from his first wife, Jane Cunningham, after 12 years of marriage.
After two years of dating, Shay proposed to Becky while on a trip to Los Angeles, and now 13 years later, they said their ‘I do’s’ at Westminster Abbey on Saturday.
Over the last few days, Becky has shared several images from the celebrations, including lovely photos of their daughters being involved in the ceremony.
Becky has also shared a little about her family’s long-standing connection to the Abbey, which is a very exclusive venue and only allows couples with strong ties to the venue to marry there.
Praising her daughters, Becky wrote: ‘A moment for these beautiful girls. We could not be prouder of their courage, grace and composure on such a special day.
‘Gracie stood up and did a reading which showed phenomenal courage at age 10.’
She went on to share a little family history, explaining: ‘We were also deeply honoured that the Dean kindly wore one of Westminster Abbey’s historic copes, which my grandmother had worked on during her time volunteering with the Guild of St Faith.
‘A very special connection to our family’s history and a moment I will personally treasure forever.
‘It’s a rare honour for a historic cope to make an appearance, and it added to an already special and meaningful day.’
Announcing their marriage over the weekend, Shay and Becky wrote on social media: ‘10.10.26 💍⛪️ Westminster Abbey’
Shay looked dashing in a black velvet tuxedo, while Becky stunned guests in an A-line white bridal gown overlaid with delicate lace patterns and sequins.
She wore a sheer floor-length tulle veil while carrying a tight bouquet of all-white roses.
Becky and Shay met while Becky was working in PR in the UK. They went public with their romance later that year.
But their relationship attracted negative attention; however, in 2013, Becky brushed off the nasty trolls, telling the Irish Mirror that Shay was ‘the most important thing in all her life’.
In 2015, Shay proposed to Becky while the couple was visiting Los Angeles, with Becky showing off her diamond ring while attending the Irish premiere of Mrs Brown’s Boys movie.
In December 2015, they welcomed their first child, Gracie, together. In 2017, their second daughter, Cassie Elsa, arrived.
Becky has been a constant support to Shay. In 2023, he was dealt a devastating blow when his brother Kieran and his uncle Ambrose died at Christmas.
Kieran Given died in his adopted home of Germany on December 23 from a recent illness, while Ambrose died in a hospice after a short illness and was laid to rest on Thursday, December 28.
