As the son of one of Ireland’s greatest actors and an artist, Aran Murphy is the first to admit that his desire to follow in their creative footsteps didn’t really come as a surprise.

What was more of a surprise, however, was how fast his launch into the acting world would be, with the 19-year-old now having three projects lined up for release in quick succession.

Knowing he wanted to explore the arts, Aran took a year out after his Leaving Cert to pursue his dream and landed three big roles, the first of which to be released is in Youth, Sharon Horgan’s new series.

Aran will then appear in War, a TV series starring Dominic West and Sienna Miller, and he is also in the Taika Waititi film Klara and the Sun. Both of these are set for release in October.

Chatting about how his acting entry is coming at quite some speed, Aran said: ‘I’m going to roll with the punches, see how it goes.

‘I’m very new to this whole thing. I thought it would be nice and staggered, but it’s very much ripping the Band-Aid off.’

In Youth, Aran plays teenager Ruairí, who is a similar age to him, and Aran, who moved to Ireland from London with his family when he was seven, says the character was interesting to play.

He told the Irish Times: ‘He’s at the same stage in his life that I’m at, where you’re on the cusp of graduating into the real world…

‘All the anxiety and uncertainty is familiar in a lot of ways. It doesn’t seem too far from what I’ve heard or experienced in my life. There’s a lot of dread.’

Youth mainly follows Ruairí’s mum, Alex, who is played by Sharon, as she navigates life in her 50s and dating. In Sharon’s classic style, there’ll be plenty of laughs mixed in with the life lessons.

Youth is set for release on September 20.
