Some local residents in the Tycor area have been evacuated due to this evening’s major fire.

The fire has spread rapidly through the old Jute factory.

40ft flames have been seen but there are no reports of any injuries.

Multiple fire service units have been drafted in to assist with the work. One crane is on site dispersing water to the site as efforts continue to bring the fire under control.

Electricity and gas has been turned off in numerous surrounding homes. Some parked cars from this evening’s Waterford V Cork match remain inaccessible.

Local business owners have expressed shock and upset over potential damage to surrounding premises.

Gardai and emergency services have reiterated their advice to the public, especially local residents, to remain indoors and keep windows shut due to asbestos concerns.
