Waterford face a major test tomorrow afternoon as they take on Cork in the TG4 Munster Senior Ladies Football Championship.

Throw-in is at 2 pm in Páirc Uí Rinn, with Waterford looking to build on an impressive opening round victory over Kerry.

The Déise produced one of the standout results of the opening weekend, defeating Kerry by 0-17 to 2-9 in a performance full of attacking intent and defensive resilience. Seven different scorers contributed on the day — a statistic that underlines the balance and threat across the team.

Speaking ahead of the clash, former Waterford player and pundit Michelle Ryan said the result, while impressive, was not entirely unexpected within Munster circles.

“Teams in Munster know each other so well that you always believe you can beat one another on any given day,” she said. “Waterford will go into every game believing they can win, and recent results have built that belief.”

Ryan pointed to the spread of scorers and attacking approach as major positives, while also highlighting the team’s ability to handle Kerry’s dangerous forward line.

However, she warned that Cork will present a different challenge, particularly given their traditional strength and scoring threat.

“Cork have always been capable of getting goals against Waterford, so limiting those chances will be key,” she added.

Cork themselves come into the game on the back of a surprise defeat to Tipperary, a result Ryan described as one of the shocks of the opening round. That loss may sharpen Cork’s focus, but Waterford will take confidence from both their recent league performances and last weekend’s win.

With momentum building and confidence high, Waterford will be aiming to make it two wins from two — though Ryan expects a tight encounter.

“If both teams bring their best, this will be a very close game,” she said.
