After defeats to Armagh and Cork, a Waterford side that promised so much earlier in the season now finds itself battling for senior championship survival.
Waterford will take on Donegal in the TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship Relegation Qualifier this Saturday at Pádraig Pearses GAA in Roscommon, with throw-in scheduled for 2 pm.
Manager Tomás Mac an tSaoir will be left scratching his head at how a campaign that began with such promise has arrived at this point. During the National League, Waterford looked every bit a side capable of challenging for All-Ireland honours. It appeared to have the quality and depth to compete with the country’s leading teams.
Their opening round clash against Cork in the All-Ireland series only reinforced that belief. Waterford led for almost 55 minutes and looked on course for a famous victory before the brilliance of Katie Quirke inspired Cork’s comeback and ultimately denied the Déise what would have been a statement win.
Had the result gone the other way, Waterford may well have found themselves preparing for a quarter-final rather than a relegation battle, making their current predicament an especially difficult one to accept.
However, attention now turns fully to this weekend’s showdown with Donegal, where the stakes could not be higher. Senior status for the 2027 season is on the line, and Waterford will need their experienced players to deliver once more.
Karen McGrath’s pace and eye for goal make her one of Waterford’s biggest attacking threats, while Kellyanne Hogan’s leadership and accuracy from placed balls will be crucial if the Déise are to come through the challenge. Bríd McMaugh’s work rate and ability to influence games in key moments, along with the creativity and energy of Katie Murray, Clare Walsh and Lara McGregor, will also be vital if Waterford are to preserve their place among the senior ranks.
The talent within this Waterford squad remains unquestioned. Now they must produce one final performance to ensure their stay in senior football continues into 2027.
