Waterford-based boxer Christina Desmond has added a European professional title to her collection after defeating Spain’s Clara López on points in Sagunto, Valencia, on Saturday night.

The Cork native secured the vacant European Boxing Union (EBU) super-lightweight title on October 24, extending her unbeaten professional record to seven wins from seven fights.

Desmond, who lives in Dungarvan and works in Waterford, has enjoyed a remarkable month after making history earlier in October by becoming the first winner of the BUI Irish women’s professional super-lightweight title.

She defeated Galway’s Louise Creaven by unanimous decision in Cork on October 9, in what was the first all-Irish women’s professional title bout held in Ireland.

Just 15 days later, Desmond was back in the ring, this time facing López on Spanish soil with the European title at stake.

The victory marks another major milestone for the former amateur standout, who has carried her success into the professional ranks.

Desmond will now look to build on her unbeaten start to professional boxing after securing two titles in the space of a fortnight.
