In a video shared by Celtic from their Lennoxtown training ground, Liam Scales appears to be teaching his teammates GAA.

The side are getting ready for their opening SPFL game on Monday against Dundee, with new signing Kasper Høgh having trained with the squad for the first time since joining from Bodø/Glimt for a club-record fee of £11 million.

Martin O’Neill will be hoping Høgh can gel into the squad in time for Monday’s opener, but it appears that, as the new signing was getting acquainted with staff, Liam Scales was focused on getting his teammates acquainted with GAA in the background.

Scales could be seen teaching a group of players, including captain Callum McGregor, some Gaelic football skills. The video starts with Scales taking a shoulder from teammate Kieran Tierney, before Tierney unsuccessfully attempts a Gaelic football pick-up.

The Wicklow man then shows Tierney how it’s done, channelling his youthful GAA skills from before he was a professional footballer.

The clip has been shared on Celtic’s social media and widely reposted in Ireland, as the whole country is still on the GAA buzz after Mayo’s All-Ireland win last weekend.

Scales was surely a happy man himself this summer, as his native Wicklow defeated Down 1-21 to 2-16 at Croke Park to win the Tailteann Cup, marking the county’s first title since winning the Tommy Murphy Cup in 2007, led by the legendary Mick O’Dwyer.

The focus for Scales now, though, turns to the new SPFL season, as he remains an important part of Celtic’s centre-back options and has taken on more of a leadership role during pre-season, even wearing the captain’s armband in some friendlies.

Celtic head into the new Scottish Premiership season as favourites to retain their title, but there will be added pressure on Martin O’Neill and his team after they just about clinched the title last season.
