Dermot Ryan says the Nire are determined to finish the season with silverware as they prepare to face Rathgormack in Sunday’s Waterford Senior Football Championship Final.
The Nire will take on the reigning champions at Cappoquin Logistics Fraher Field, with throw-in at 2.30 pm, as Rathgormack bid to make it four county titles in a row.
Speaking to WLR Sport, Ryan said preparations had gone well, with the excitement building in the village ahead of the big day.
“Everyone’s available for training. There’s a good buzz; you’re looking forward to it. The colours are going up around the village, and everyone is just looking forward to Sunday,” he said.
The sides have developed a fierce rivalry in recent years, with their meetings often decided by the narrowest of margins. However, Ryan insists the Nire are concentrating on their own performance rather than looking back at previous results.
He said the focus is on being ready for the first whistle, when past encounters and the build-up will count for little.
Rathgormack will provide a formidable challenge as they chase a fourth successive title, with Ryan highlighting the strength of their forward line.
Stephen Curry has returned to action in recent games, scoring six points against Gaultier, and is among the players The Nire will need to keep under control.
Ryan said it would take a collective defensive effort to limit Rathgormack’s attacking threat, with the work of the wider team crucial in restricting the supply of possession.
The Nire will also look to Aaron Ryan to continue his excellent form. Ryan has impressed in both codes in recent seasons and has been an important contributor to the football side this year.
Dermot Ryan praised his accuracy in front of the posts and the confidence his performances bring to the team.
The Nire now have an opportunity to finish the campaign with county football honours.
