The JJ Kavanagh & Sons Senior Football Championship continues this evening, with The Nire taking on Gaultier in Round Two of Group A.

The game gets underway at 7.30 pm at Cappoquin Logistics Fraher Field in Dungarvan.

Both sides come into the game with victories from the opening round.

The Nire got the better of An Rinn by 0-14 to 0-11 last weekend, while Gaultier defeated Kilrossanty by 1-16 to 0-9.

The two teams therefore sit level on two points at the top of Group A ahead of tonight’s meeting.

The Nire captain James McGrath says the club’s recent hurling campaign has meant limited preparation time for the football championship.

The Nire reached the senior hurling final this year, with many of their footballers involved with the county hurling set-up.

McGrath says the team had just three football training sessions before last weekend’s opening-round victory over An Rinn and believes there is plenty of room for improvement.

Gaultier come into the game having produced a strong second-half performance against Kilrossanty last weekend, scoring 1-13 after the interval while restricting Kilrossanty to a single point.

Gaultier footballer Tommy Martin says the team knew they had more to give after trailing at half-time and were pleased with the response after the break.

The Nire and Gaultier have also met in recent years, including in last year’s championship semi-final, when a single point beat Gaultier.

Tonight’s game promises to be another significant test for both sides as they look to strengthen their position in Group A.
