Sharlene Mawdsley has shared an update on the European Championships, weeks after suffering an injury at the National Championships.
The athlete had to pull out of the competition in agony, and she’s now confirmed that she’ll sadly have to sit out the upcoming tournament in Birmingham.
Posting an update on Friday, Sharlene said: ‘I’m so sad to say that I won’t be making the start line at the European Championships next week.

‘We made huge progress after I was diagnosed with a tear in my hamstring, but unfortunately the timing just wasn’t on my side.’
Sharlene went on to thank everyone for their support, writing: ‘I can’t thank my team enough. They have worked around the clock to give me every possible chance, and we really pushed the limits together.
‘@martinamc_oly @paul.carragher and @athleticsirelandofficial, thank you for all your support & [her boyfriend and Tipp hurler] Mikey Breen for being my training partner these last two weeks!!’

She finished her post on a positive note, saying: ‘We’ll keep working hard, and I’m looking forward to getting back on the track later this season. Down, not out.’
Lots of people sent their love to Sharlene and wished her a speedy recovery.
‘We are gutted for you, Sharlene, as you so deserve to be at the Europeans after your amazing season. We wish you a healthy recovery and can’t wait to see you back on the track very soon,’ wrote one person.

Another added: ‘Wishing you a good recovery. Smart decision no doubt, and we look forward to seeing you come back to it when you’re ready.’
Sharlene has been sharing regular updates since suffering her injury, including how her friends, Olympians Sophie Becker and Phil Healy, tried to cheer her up.
