The Cappoquin Logistics Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship reaches the knockout stages this weekend, with three games across Saturday and Sunday and plenty of local talent on show.
Saturday’s action at Fraher Field in Dungarvan gets underway at 1.30 pm when Tallow meet Ballysaggart. Ballysaggart finished third in Group B with two points, while Tulach An Iarainn lost all three of their group games, although Ballysaggart’s earlier meeting with them was a tight affair, finishing 0-18 to 0-15. Shane Bennett is the standout name for Ballysaggart, having been involved with the Waterford senior set-up this year.
At 5.45 pm, Portlaw face Clashmore/Kinsalebeg, with Portlaw going into the game having topped Group B with three wins from three. They scored 20 or more points in two of those victories, while Clashmore/Kinsalebeg finished bottom of Group A without a win. However, they were competitive in their final group games, including a three-point defeat to Brickey Rangers. Brian Lynch and Tadhg de Búrca provide further Waterford senior experience for Clashmore/Kinsalebeg.
Sunday brings the weekend’s standout fixture, as Brickey Rangers take on Affane/Cappoquin/Tourin at 6.30 pm in Fraher Field. Brickey were unbeaten winners of Group A, while Affane/Cappoquin/Tourin finished second, and their group meeting was decided by just two points, Brickey winning 0-22 to 2-14.
Brickey have a strong squad featuring captain Oran Keevers, goalkeeper Jamie Kiely, Tom O’Connell, Cormac Deevy and Sean Ronayne.
Meanwhile, Darren Curran, Shane Fives, Eoghan Murray, Andy Molumby, Conor Murray, Conor Rooney, Jack Twomey and Charlie Nicholson are among the key players in the Affane/Cappoquin/Tourin panel. Ben Rooney, who won the Munster Poc Fada title this year, will also be one to watch.
With both sides capable of putting up big scores and so little between them in the group stage, Sunday’s meeting has all the ingredients of a close encounter and could be the game of the weekend.
