Munster will begin their Investec Champions Cup campaign against Racing 92 at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday night, with the province paying tribute to Anthony Foley on the 10th anniversary of his passing.
In honour of the late Munster legend, the number eight jersey will be retired for the day, as it was for the meeting with Glasgow in 2016. Brian Gleeson will wear number 24.
Head coach Clayton McMillan has made six changes to the starting fifteen following last weekend’s draw in Belfast, with four young players in line to make their Champions Cup debuts.
First-year Academy out-half Charlie O’Shea and flanker Seán Edogbo will start, while Max Clein and Ben O’Donovan are named among the replacements.
Summer signings Jack Aungier, Marnus van der Merwe and Kieran Brookes are also set to make their first Champions Cup appearances for Munster.
The back three of Ben O’Connor, Shay McCarthy and Seán O’Brien remain unchanged, with Alex Nankivell and Dan Kelly continuing in the centre partnership. Craig Casey partners O’Shea at half-back.
Jeremy Loughman, van der Merwe and Aungier form the front row, with Tom Ahern and captain Tadhg Beirne in the second row. Edogbo, John Hodnett and Gleeson complete the pack.
Speaking ahead of the game, McMillan said the players were determined to produce a performance that Foley would be proud of.
He said the former Munster captain remained part of the province’s daily conversations and that the team was thinking of Foley and his family more than ever this week.
McMillan added that the best way to honour Foley’s legacy was to show the right mentality and deliver a committed team performance.
He also welcomed the opportunity for young players O’Shea and Edogbo to take another step in their development, while expressing confidence in Clein and O’Donovan if called upon.
