Mayo have ended a 75-year wait for All-Ireland Senior Football Championship glory after defeating reigning champions Kerry in a thrilling final at Croke Park.

Andy Moran’s side claimed the Sam Maguire Cup for the first time since 1951 after a 1-20 to 1-17 victory over the Kingdom.

Kerry made the stronger start and led by six points during the first half, with David Clifford finding the net for the reigning champions.

However, Mayo responded brilliantly before half-time and went into the break just a point behind.

They took control after the interval, with Darragh Beirne scoring a crucial goal to put Mayo in front. Further scores from the likes of Ryan O’Donoghue, Kobe McDonald and Jack Carney helped the Westerners build a lead.

Kerry tried to mount a late comeback, with David Clifford adding to his tally, but Mayo held their nerve in the closing stages.

The final whistle sparked emotional scenes at Croke Park as Mayo finally ended a wait stretching back to 1951 and secured a historic All-Ireland Senior Football Championship title.
