Waterford FC striker Tommy Lonergan has finished as runner-up in the May SSE Airtricity League/Soccer Writers Ireland Player of the Month Award.

The Blues forward enjoyed an outstanding month, scoring five goals and providing one assist. His impressive run of form also included one of the fastest goals ever scored in the League of Ireland.

Lonergan was narrowly beaten to the award by Dundalk captain Daryl Horgan, who claimed the honour for the fifth time in his career following a nationwide vote of football journalists.

The Waterford striker has recently been away on international duty with the Republic of Ireland Under-21 national football team for games against Croatia and Qatar.

Lonergan now turns his attention back to league action and is expected to be involved on Friday night when Waterford welcome Sligo Rovers F.C. to the RSC in a crucial SSE Airtricity Premier Division clash.
