Former GAA President John Horan has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the Steering Group on Integration, as work continues towards the integration of the GAA, Camogie Association and Ladies Gaelic Football Association.
Horan, who is a member of the Na Fianna club in Dublin, served as Uachtarán CLG from 2018 to 2021. His appointment was nominated and ratified by all three associations at meetings of their respective management committees.
He succeeds Dr Mary McAleese, who has been thanked for her leadership and contribution to the integration process during her time as chairperson.
The Steering Group says significant progress has already been made through the work of volunteers, members and stakeholders across the three associations.
It added that the governance structure and code representation models are close to completion, following the most recent Oireachtas hearing, where there was broad recognition of the progress made.
GAA President Jarlath Burns welcomed Horan’s appointment, highlighting his leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic and his experience of bringing Camogie and LGFA representatives onto GAA Management during his presidency.
Burns said he looked forward to working with Horan towards an integrated Gaelic games community, with a vision of creating a GAA where everyone belongs.
LGFA President Trina Murray also welcomed the appointment, describing Horan’s knowledge of Gaelic games as a significant asset as the integration process moves forward.
Camogie Association President Brian Molloy said Horan’s understanding of the GAA landscape would help secure support for the project and deliver integration in the shortest possible timeframe.
Horan said he was honoured to take on the role and highlighted the importance of valuing members across the GAA, Camogie and LGFA.
He will now lead the next phase of the integration process, with the three associations continuing to work towards a shared future for Gaelic games.
