A “significant majority” of Republic of Ireland players have voted in favour of playing tomorrow’s Nations League fixture against Israel.

FAI CEO David Courell confirmed a vote took place among the squad following a meeting between players and the association on Saturday.

The meeting was called after one player asked to withdraw from the Irish squad ahead of the fixture.

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson confirmed the player has now left the squad, describing the development as a “change of mind” on Saturday morning.

“This morning was just a change of mind for one of the players,” Hallgrimsson said.

The uncertainty led to Ireland’s scheduled pre-match press conference and training session being postponed while discussions took place.

Courell subsequently confirmed that a vote was held among the players, with a “significant majority” deciding that the team should fulfil the fixture against Israel.

Speaking about the situation, Hallgrimsson acknowledged the discomfort surrounding the game.

“Nobody is comfortable at the moment,” he said.

“It’s about limiting the disadvantage both personally and also for Irish football, that we need to find some solution. There’s no action we do that everyone will agree to.”

Ireland are due to face Israel in Debrecen, Hungary, tomorrow evening.
