Waterford athlete Isabelle Gaffney has claimed a superb bronze medal in the 800 metres at the European U18 Championships in Rieti, Italy.

The West Waterford AC athlete was Waterford’s only representative on the European U18 team and enjoyed a terrific few days of competition on the international stage.

Gaffney began her campaign on Thursday morning, finishing second in her heat in a time of 2:10.60 to progress to the semi-finals.

She then produced another impressive performance on Saturday morning, qualifying for the 800m final after finishing third in her semi-final in 2:06.71.

The West Waterford AC athlete saved her best for the final on Sunday evening, equalling her personal best time of 2:06.10 as she secured a brilliant third-place finish and a European bronze medal.

It was a fantastic achievement for Gaffney, who continues to make her mark at international level, and a proud moment for West Waterford AC and athletics in the county.
