Fourmilewater will contest their first-ever Waterford Senior Hurling Championship final after a dramatic weekend victory over Roanmore set up a meeting with reigning champions Ballygunner.
Fourmilewater produced a sensational finish at Fraher Field, coming through 2-16 to 0-17 winners against Roanmore in a contest that went right down to the wire.
Roanmore led 0-12 to 1-6 at half-time, with Gavin O’Brien outstanding from placed balls, but Fourmilewater gradually turned the game around after the break.
The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute when Liam O’Brien found the net, before Chris Ryan added a crucial late point to secure a famous victory.
The result means Fourmilewater will now play in their first senior county final, an historic achievement for the club.
Standing in their way will be a Ballygunner side chasing an extraordinary 13th consecutive Waterford senior title.
Ballygunner were equally impressive in their semi-final, pulling away from De La Salle in the second half to record a 1-27 to 0-14 victory at Walsh Park.
There was little between the teams during the opening 30 minutes, with Ballygunner leading 0-11 to 0-8 at half-time.
However, the defending champions came flying out of the blocks after the interval, with Conor Tobin finding the net just 30 seconds into the second half.
That goal changed the game, with Ballygunner taking control and eventually running out 16-point winners.
The champions’ strength in depth was again evident, while their ability to dominate possession and punish mistakes proved decisive.
Now the stage is set for a fascinating final.
Ballygunner are chasing history once again, while Fourmilewater are preparing for the biggest game in the club’s history.
