Spain have been crowned world champions for a second time after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final.

The decisive moment came in extra time when Ferran Torres found the net to settle a tense final at New York/New Jersey Stadium.

Spain were reduced to ten men late on, but held on to secure a famous victory and add the World Cup to the European Championship they won in 2024.

The result sees Spain emulate the achievements of their legendary 2010 team, who also won the European Championship and World Cup in successive tournaments.

They dominated possession for long periods and were praised for their technical quality and strength in depth, with two substitutes combining for the winning goal.

Argentina struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the final, with their defensive approach frustrating their attacking threat. Lionel Messi, captaining Argentina in his third World Cup final, now faces questions over whether this was his final appearance at the tournament.

Spain’s triumph comes 16 years after their first World Cup victory and confirms their status as the dominant force in international football.

They are now European champions and world champions, with a new generation led by the likes of Lamine Yamal continuing the legacy of the country’s golden generation.
