The opening Sunday of the new Premier League season delivered plenty of drama, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton all involved in entertaining contests.
Manchester City came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1 at the Etihad. Marcus Tavernier put the visitors ahead, but City turned the game around late on, with Marc Guehi equalising before Josko Gvardiol struck the winner in stoppage time.
Liverpool were also involved in a dramatic finish, rescuing a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Newcastle twice took the lead, but Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the ninth minute of added time to earn a point for the visitors.
There was no such comeback needed for Brighton, who produced the most impressive performance of the day. They raced into a 4-0 lead against Aston Villa inside the opening 31 minutes, with Jack Hinshelwood scoring twice in just 79 seconds. Villa’s afternoon went from bad to worse when João Gomes was sent off before half-time.
Sunday’s results: Manchester City 2-1 Bournemouth, Newcastle United 2-2 Liverpool, Brighton 4-0 Aston Villa.
