Jack Crowley, Andrew Porter and Mack Hansen are among the extensive list of absentees as Andy Farrell calls up the uncapped Connacht trio Billy Bohan, Sam Illo and Sean Jansen for Ireland’s Nations Championship Tests this summer.
Tighthead prop Sam Illo comes into camp in the place of his Connacht teammate Finlay Bealham, much like he has at club level since the new year. He featured at U20 level for Ireland during the 2021 U20 Six Nations, but hasn’t earned a senior call-up to date.
Meanwhile, Bohan returns to the Ireland camp as cover for loosehead after fulfilling the same role ahead of the Six Nations, though he is yet to be capped. Jeremy Loughman and Tom O’Toole have been called up to play at loosehead this summer. For Jansen, the kiwi-born No.8 comes in as cover for the injured Ryan Baird, who is one of 10 players missing this summer tour through injury.

The big headliners of the absentees, though, are Crowley, Porter, and Hansen. Crowley has been absent from Munster since mid-April due to what Clayton McMillan has called a blood vessel issue. His timeline for a return isn’t clear yet. Leinster trio Sam Prendergast, Harry Byrne and Ciarán Frawley (who’ll be playing for Connacht next season) are covering the fly-half position in place of the Cork man.
Hansen is still recovering from a foot surgery he had that ruled him out of the Six Nations. Meanwhile, Porter misses out after picking up a calf injury in Leinster’s URC semi-final win over the Stormers. Shayne Bolton, Jack Boyle, Edwin Edogbo, Tom Farrell, Paddy McCarthy and Calvin Nash have also been ruled out due to injury.
Ulster duo Rob Baloucoune and Stuart McCloskey return after their dazzling Six Nations campaign, while Jacob Stockdale keeps his place in the squad after James Lowe announced his departure from Ireland, with Jimmy O’Brien, Tommy O’Brien and Jamie Osborne likely vying for that left wing position with the Ulsterman.

‘We have three tough Tests against Australia, Japan and New Zealand and it’s important that we hit the ground running in this new tournament,’ Ireland Head Coach Andy Farrell said on the announcement.
‘The experience of playing down under will be priceless for us and even though we’ll be playing in front of largely partisan home crowds, we are also excited about playing in front of a huge Irish support. Their dedication to the team never ceases to amaze us and with a huge diaspora down under I’m sure we can count on a large Irish following in Sydney, Newcastle and then on to Auckland.
‘For us, we are aiming to build on our positive performances during the recent Guinness Men’s Six Nations.’

He added: ‘The non-Leinster contingent across the three provinces have completed a three-day training block this week in the IRFU HPC ahead of our departure on Monday and it has given us the chance to look at the squad going forward. Congratulations to Billy, Sam and Sean on their selections, and each of them has earned the right to be selected after their performances this season.
‘Their selection, allied to an experienced majority who we hope to see perform strongly for Leinster in the BKT URC final on Friday night, will add great energy to the squad which we’ve been building over the last number of campaigns.’
