Celtic fans threw tennis balls at Hoops owner Dermot Desmond during the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews in Scotland.

Desmond was taking part in the Pro-Am tournament, playing alongside American five-time major winner Brooks Koepka, he is competing alongside his son Ross.

However, on the 15th hole of their round on Saturday, Dermot Desmond was the target of a protest from Celtic fans wearing balaclavas, as they threw tennis balls at the billionaire while he was preparing to putt on the green.

The tennis balls were wrapped with a picture of Dermot Desmond’s face with a cross through it, signalling their desire for Desmond and the rest of the board to resign.

In a short statement, a spokesperson for Police Scotland said: ‘Around 2 pm on Saturday, 3 October, 2026, we were aware of tennis balls being thrown on the golf course in St Andrews.

‘There were no reports of injuries. Enquiries are ongoing.’

In a post on X, the Celtic Fans collective said: ‘Dermot Desmond has essentially been allowed to run Celtic Football Club whilst using his wealth to hide from supporters and accountability.

‘Fans took the chance today to send a message that this arrangement cannot continue.’

Desmond also owns stakes in League of Ireland side Shamrock Rovers.
