The Reigning All-Ireland club champions, Ballygunner, opened their 2026 JJ Kavanagh & Sons Co. Senior Hurling Championship campaign with an emphatic 19-point victory over Passage at Walsh Park, pulling away in the second half to claim a 2-28 to 0-15 win.
Despite the final scoreline, the contest was far more competitive during the opening half, with Passage staying firmly in touch and causing problems for the reigning champions with their puck-out strategy and defensive organisation.
The game’s defining moment arrived after the break when Passage were reduced to 14 men following the dismissal of Dale Cullinan after picking up two yellow cards. Ballygunner capitalised on their numerical advantage and gradually took control of proceedings.
Scores began to flow for the city side in the closing stages, with impressive shooting from distance helping them stretch their lead. One of the highlights came from Mikey Mahony, whose long-range effort sailed over the bar as Ballygunner finished strongly to seal a comfortable opening-round success.
Speaking afterwards, Ballygunner manager Jason Ryan admitted the extra player played a major role in the outcome but was pleased with how his side pushed on in the second half.
Ryan said the strong wind had influenced the opening period and that his side were satisfied to have limited Passage to eight points before the break. He also pointed to the challenge of bringing players back together following inter-county commitments and summer breaks.
The Ballygunner boss revealed that several players are still being eased back into championship action, with minutes being carefully managed as they build fitness and sharpness over the coming weeks.
He welcomed the addition of a break in the championship schedule later in the group stages, saying it would provide teams with an opportunity to regroup while helping to reduce the physical and emotional toll of a demanding campaign.
Ballygunner now turn their attention to the club’s second senior side, who were due to face Roanmore in their opening championship fixture today at 2.30 pm in Azzuri Walsh Park.
