Ballygunner look set to have far too much for Lismore when the sides meet in the 2026 JJ Kavanagh & Sons Waterford Club Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final this Saturday.
The reigning Waterford and All-Ireland club champions face Lismore at 3 pm on Saturday, August 15, at Cappaquinn Logistics Fraher Field, Dungarvan, with Ballygunner going into the knockout stages in sensational form.
The Gunners have won all five of their championship games so far and have been the standout team in the competition.
Across those five matches, Ballygunner have scored nine goals and 131 points, while conceding just one goal and 82 points.
Their closest contest came against Abbeyside, where they eventually ran out 0-22 to 0-18 winners despite Abbeyside playing with 14 men.
In contrast, Lismore have endured a difficult Group B campaign, winning two of their five matches and suffering three defeats.
They lost narrowly to Mount Sion in their opening game before heavy defeats to Fourmilewater and Roanmore. They did recover with victories over Dunhill and Ballygunner B to secure their place in the quarter-finals.
However, the reward is arguably the toughest possible assignment.
Lismore have plenty of experienced players capable of causing problems, including Jack Pendergast, Paudie Pendergast, Ben O’Sullivan, Oisín O’Gorman and Ray Barry.
Former Waterford goalkeeper Seanie Barry also brings valuable experience.
But Ballygunner simply appear to possess too much quality across the field.
The reigning champions can call upon a remarkable collection of players with Waterford experience, including Stephen O’Keeffe, Ian Kenny, Tadhg Foley, Philip Mahony, Ronan Power, Conor Sheehan, Paddy Leavey, Dessie Hutchinson, Mark Hartley, Peter Hogan, Patrick Fitzgerald, Kevin Mahony and Mikey Mahony.
The depth available to the Gunners is frightening, with players such as Pauric Mahony and Conor Tobin also making an impact when introduced from the bench.
Ballygunner have shown throughout the championship that they can score heavily while also possessing a defence capable of keeping opposition attacks under control.
For Lismore, the challenge will be to stay in the contest for as long as possible and make Ballygunner work for their place in the semi-finals.
But on current form, it is difficult to see anything other than a Ballygunner victory.
They are unbeaten, have been scoring freely, have conceded just one goal in five games and are chasing an extraordinary 13th consecutive Waterford senior club title.
With their experience, strength in depth and championship pedigree, Ballygunner look set to have simply too much for Lismore on Saturday.
