Further funding will be needed before a key missing section of Waterford’s Sustainable Transport Bridge can be completed on the North Quays.

Questions have been raised at the most recent Plenary meeting of Waterford Council over a gap on the northern side of the bridge, which still needs to be connected into the wider North Quays development.

Councillor Joe Kelly says people are asking who will complete the unfinished section.
He says, “few people have asked me about it and to be honest I wasn’t certain… I thought the developer was just going to finish everything… and I just wonder who’s going to fill in that 40 feet or wherever it is of a gap.”

Further funding needed

Waterford Council says a podium structure is required to link the bridge into the North Quays site, due to a height difference between the development and the bridge landing point.

Council CEO Sean McKeown says the bridge is already tied into the South Quays, but additional infrastructure is needed on the northern side.

He says, “there is a podium required… the sustainable transport bridge is effectively tied into the South Quays, but it needs to be properly tied into the North Quays.”

He adds that the council has submitted an application under the Housing Activation Fund, in conjunction with the Land Development Agency, to secure funding for the work.

It’s understood the funding is being requested under the fund, as the works form part of a residential area within the wider development.

The podium would then provide access to six residential blocks set to form part of the first phase of the North Quays development.
