Organisers of the WLR Waterford Viking Marathon are calling on volunteers to come forward ahead of this year’s event, as preparations continue for one of the biggest weekends in the city’s sporting calendar.

The marathon returns on Saturday, June 20, and Sunday, June 21, 2026, with thousands of runners expected to take part across a packed programme of events.

These include the full marathon, half marathon, 10 kilometre run, marathon relay, a disability friendly run, and children’s races at the RSC.

Volunteers are needed across a range of roles throughout the weekend, including stewarding, water stations, registration, and route assistance.

Organisers say every volunteer plays a key role in keeping the event running safely and smoothly, while also helping to create the atmosphere along the course.

Race director Joe Caulfield says the support of volunteers is essential as entry numbers continue to grow.

Joe continued to say the event has more than 5,000 entries already, the event relies on a strong volunteer team to keep everything moving on the day.

He’s encouraging people in Waterford to get involved and help support runners taking part.

The WLR Waterford Viking Marathon is now in its 14th year and has become one of the city’s biggest annual sporting events, bringing thousands of participants and spectators into the streets each summer.
