Excellence, innovation, and a deep-rooted commitment to sustainable farming were celebrated as Tirlán hosted its 2026 Dairy and Sustainability Awards.
The event, held on Monday, April 27, recognised the outstanding contribution of family farm suppliers across Ireland who continue to deliver high-quality milk from grass-based systems. With many farms spanning generations, the awards highlighted the dedication and care that underpin Irish dairy production.
A total of 12 winners were honoured across categories, including milk quality, milk solids, environmental stewardship, and farm ambassadorship.
Flying the flag for Waterford, Shane and Kate Fitzgerald from Portlaw were named Overall Milk Suppliers of the Year, while also receiving the Farming Ambassador Award. The двой recognition reflects their leadership within the sector and their commitment to sustainably producing high-quality milk.
Operating a herd of approximately 200 spring-calving Holstein Friesian cows, the Fitzgeralds have developed an efficient, grass-based system focused on performance, animal welfare, and environmental responsibility. Their approach is supported by ongoing investment and strong grassland management practices.
Passionate advocates for Irish dairy, the couple regularly open their farm to the public and industry groups, showcasing how productive farming can go hand in hand with sustainability and community engagement.
Speaking at the awards, Tirlán Chairperson John Murphy praised the work of suppliers across the country, noting that their dedication continues to set the standard for quality and sustainability both at home and internationally.
Chief Executive Seán Molloy added that the resilience and professionalism of farmers, particularly during a challenging spring, provide strong confidence in the co-operative’s future.
Tirlán suppliers have long been recognised for delivering premium quality milk from well-managed, grass-fed herds — forming the backbone of a range of award-winning products, including Ireland’s leading dairy brand, Avonmore.
