Nursing and midwifery staff at University Hospital Waterford were proud to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week 2026 recently with a joint initiative between Maternity and Public Nursing Services.

As part of the year’s celebration, the initiative saw a new hospital grade electric breast pump donated to the emergency department at UHW as often a visit to the emergency department can cause interruption to breastfeeding, which can lead to effects on milk supply, comfort and confidence.

Following the donation, Sophie Whyte, CMS Infant Feeding/Lactation University Hospital Waterford,said: “The availability of a hospital grade electric pump offers us the chance to support mothers to maintain their supply while receiving emergency medical treatment or while their baby is receiving emergency medical treatment. It will ensure relief of discomfort and help prevent blocked ducts and engorgement, reduce the risk of complications such as mastitis and ensures breastfeeding remains supported as part of compassionate family centred care.

“This donation reflects UHW’s ongoing commitment to creating a breastfeeding friendly environment across all areas of the hospital.”

This year’s theme for World Breastfeeding Week is breastfeeding for a sustainable start in life: Strengthen What Works”. The theme highlights the importance of building on proven supports that enable families to achieve their breastfeeding goals.
