A 15-year-old boy has died after being recovered from the water at Lough Ree in Co Westmeath.

Gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of a person in difficulty in the water at Carnakilla Point, Glasson, shortly after 7.30pm on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

A search operation was carried out, with the boy’s body recovered from the water a short time later.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The teenager’s remains have since been removed to the mortuary at Mullingar Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be arranged.

A file will be prepared for the Coroner.

Gardaí have not released any further details at this stage.
