The countdown is almost over to one of the biggest Waterford sporting events on our calendar, with more than 5,000 runners prepared to take part in the 14th annual WLR Waterford Viking Marathon.

Participants from across Ireland and overseas are expected to descend on Ireland’s oldest city for what promises to be a fantastic celebration of sport, community and achievement.

The event programme includes the full marathon, half-marathon, 10k, marathon relay and run for all attracting runners of all ages and abilities.

The main race gets underway from the mall at 9am this morning, with competitors’ advised to arrive early and make use of parking facilities available throughout the city centre.

There’s a number of fan zones featuring music, entertainment and DJs.

They will be located along the route, helping to create a vibrant atmosphere for both participants and spectators. Mount Congreve Gardens is expected to be a major focal point for supporters, with live music, refreshments and entertainment planned throughout the morning.

The event will then conclude with a spectacular finish on O’Connell Street, where thousands of supporters are expected to gather to welcome runners across the line.

Prize-giving ceremonies are scheduled throughout the day, with the 10k winners being honoured from 10.30am, followed by the half-marathon and 11.30 and the full marathon at 12.30.

Organisers are encouraging the public to line the streets, support the runners and help create the unique atmosphere that has made the WLR Waterford Viking Marathon one of the country’s most popular running events.
