Tributes are pouring in for a ‘talented’ young sportswoman who has died after collapsing during a football game.

Aoibheann Clarke, 16, was playing for Taghmon Camross LGFA Club in the minor division 6 ladies football final on Tuesday.

It’s understood that Aoibheann collapsed during injury time, and after she received treatment on the pitch, she was rushed to hospital.

According to the Irish Times, Aoibheann’s teammates stayed at the club awaiting news before being told she’d sadly passed away.

Taghmon Camross LGFA has since paid tribute to Aoibheann, saying everyone ‘is heartbroken by the tragic loss of a cherished member of our Minor team.’

The statement continued: ‘At this incredibly difficult time, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who responded so quickly and compassionately to the emergency.

‘Our heartfelt thanks go to the spectators who assisted, the first responders, the ambulance service, Garda and the fire crew for their professionalism, care, and support.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with our player’s family, friends, teammates, coaches, and all who knew and loved her.

‘We ask that everyone respect the family’s privacy as they grieve this devastating loss. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.’

Wexford Camogie added: ‘Today, our thoughts are firmly with our friends in Wexford Ladies Football and with everyone in the Taghmon Camross Club.

‘Wexford Camogie is deeply saddened by the heartbreaking passing of Aoibheann Clarke, a talented 16-year-old player with her whole life ahead of her.

‘We extend our heartfelt and sincere condolences to Aoibheann’s family, her friends, her teammates, her club, and to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

‘Wexford Camogie also has the Ferns Club and the Referee in our thoughts today. We acknowledge that it was a very difficult evening for all concerned, and we are thinking of them also at this incredibly sad and difficult time.

‘May Aoibheann rest in eternal peace. She will forever be remembered by those who loved her, played alongside her, and cherished her. “The final whistle has blown, but your spirit will forever live on in every game played”.’

Aoibheann had also lined out with All Blacks AFC and Wexford FC. Remembering Aoibheann, All Blacks AFC said: ‘Heartbroken. Hard to find words.

‘Last night we got the tragic news of the sudden passing of our beloved player Aoibheann Clarke. Declan and Carol had lost their beautiful daughter, Emma and Aimee lost their little sister, and we lost a great teammate and friend.

‘Aoibheann – your strength and determination as a player was hard to match. Dependable, strong, consistent. When people told you no, you said (quietly) yes. Your quick wit and character as a person gained you many, many friends, young and old. You will never be forgotten.

‘Aoibheann was a vital part of multiple club league titles, as well as this year’s U19 Interleague Cup with Wexford, and will be greatly missed on and off the pitch forever more.

‘To say we are heartbroken is an understatement. Our thoughts and prayers are with Declan, Carol, Emma and Aimee and all of Aoibheann’s family and wide circle of friends at this time. Arrangements to follow.’
