A planning application has been lodged for a large scale solar farm covering almost 150 hectares near Cappoquin.

The proposed development would include ground mounted solar panels, transformer stations, battery storage containers and new road access across a number of sites east of Cappoquin.

The application seeks 10 year planning permission for the project, which would be built across Drumroe, Clashnagoneen, Kilcannon (Osborne) and adjoining townlands.

The solar panels would cover around 145 hectares and are expected to have an operational lifespan of 40 years.

Plans also include underground cabling, new and upgraded site entrances, security fencing, CCTV, landscaping, a bridge over the Clashnagoneen Stream and overhead cabling crossing the River Finisk.

A Natura Impact Statement has been submitted as part of the application because of the potential environmental impacts.

A decision is due by August 19th.
