Efforts continued at Slievenamon until just after midnight to control a significant fire on the mountain. Emergency services were in attendance, with crews from Tipperary Fire and Rescue Services, as well as crews from Carrick-on-Suir and Clonmel attending the blaze.

Yesterday morning, July 20 at approximately 08:30am, crews from Clonmel attended the scene with air support sought shortly afterwards. Shortly after midnight, crews announced they were stepping down for the safety of crew members.

Overnight Temperatures at Slievenamon

In a statement by Tipperary County Council, it was stated that temperatures were expected to fall last night.

A spokesperson said: ‘The decision to stand down firefighting operations was made due to the challenges posed by darkness, difficult terrain, and limited scope for effective intervention. Emergency services will maintain a presence in the area throughout the night to monitor the situation and respond as necessary. 

At this stage, there is no expectation that residential properties will be impacted by the fire. The operational response will be reviewed early tomorrow morning, including consultation with partner agencies and utilization of aerial support information.

Safety Advice for Residents near Slievenamon

Public safety advice remains in place for residents affected by smoke – keep windows and doors closed, especially for those with respiratory conditions. The public is urged to avoid unnecessary travel to the area to allow emergency services access to the site.

Current indications suggest that the rate of fire spread is expected to reduce overnight as temperatures fall. Emergency services will continue to monitor developments and take appropriate action to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.’

Elsewhere, fires of a smaller scale were reported in the Ferrybank area, behind the Clover Meadows residential area, and emergency services were in attendance at the former Jute Factory site in Tycor.

There is a notable drop in temperatures this morning, however highs of 23 degrees are expected today.
