Shaws Department Store is set for a significant makeover, with plans lodged to modernise the Meagher’s Quay frontage of Shaws Department Store while respecting its historic setting.

Shaw’s Retail Stores Limited has applied for planning permission to replace the existing 1960s two-storey plastered shopfront with a new two-storey glazed façade of increased height, designed to create a brighter and more contemporary street presence.

The proposal also includes illuminated shopfront signage, a projecting store sign, the installation of a new entrance canopy and alterations at street level, including the infilling of recessed areas serving a fire exit and electricity substation.

The project carries added significance because the building forms part of a Protected Structure and directly adjoins the historic former Bank of Ireland building, which is also a Protected Structure. Any works will therefore be carefully assessed to ensure they preserve the architectural and historical character of the streetscape.

If approved, the redevelopment would represent the most substantial upgrade to the store’s exterior in decades, replacing a façade dating from the 1960s with a more modern design featuring extensive glazing intended to improve visibility and natural light.

The company was founded in 1864 by Henry Shaw, who opened a small drapery business in Mountmellick, County Laois. From those beginnings, the family business steadily expanded across Ireland, establishing itself as one of the country’s longest-running independent department store chains.
